Reduce the risk of expensive surprises

A sustainable project starts with a sustainable budget. In the hotel industry, where every investment should generate revenue over time, it’s crucial to think about financial sustainability from the very beginning.

This is not just about initial purchase prices, but about the total cost of ownership – which extends over the entire life cycle of the product.

“The key is to anchor sustainability already in the design and planning phase. Well-thought-out solutions and material choices that match the budget reduce the risk of expensive surprises down the road,” says Floris Bosmans, Sustainability Manager at Satelliet Hospitality Furniture, a leading design company in furniture for hotels and restaurants.

– Instead of just looking for the cheapest solution, hoteliers should focus on affordable quality. This means choosing stylish products in the mid-range segment with durable surfaces and durable materials that can withstand the harsh hotel environment and have a long service life.

Financial sustainability: Ensure the full cost

Floris gives the following tips:

Consider the total cost of ownership: Don’t just focus on the purchase price. Consider the entire product life cycle, from purchase to maintenance and possible replacement, to get a fair picture of the true cost.

Prioritise affordable quality: Invest in furniture and materials that are durable and of high quality, even if they are not the absolute cheapest. It reduces the need for repairs and early replacements.

Choose flexible financing solutions: Consider leasing or renting instead of just buying. This can provide better control over cash flow and spread out costs.

Schedule regular maintenance: Make sure to have both daily and deep cleaning routines in place to extend the life of the products. Use the right cleaning agent to avoid damage.

Plan for a long service life: Choose furniture where certain parts, such as the frame of a chair, have a very long lifespan. By being able to easily replace materials such as fabric, you can refresh your interior without having to buy completely new furniture.

Choose sustainable materials: Also think about material choices such as electrically heated outdoor furniture or types of wood that minimize maintenance. This contributes to both economic and environmental sustainability.

Circular Choices: Reducing the Environmental Footprint

Sustainability in hospitality is also about making conscious choices to minimize environmental impact – without compromising on the guest experience. By thinking circularly, hotels can create a unique and responsible profile that attracts modern guests.

At Satelliet, a kind of ID (“product passport”) has been created for each product based on life cycle analyses, so that customers can easily see what carbon footprint and environmental impact there is.

“In the future, I envisage customers coming to us with a ‘carbon budget’ and making the choices of furniture that make the budget stick,” says Floris Bosmans.

He sums up his tips for better environmental choices:

Give your furniture a new lease of life: Consider upgrading existing furniture with new parts or finishes. It extends the lifespan and reduces waste.

Choose recyclable materials: Give preference to textiles and materials that consist of a single component (mono-material). This means that they can easily be recycled 100 percent when they have reached the end of their life.

Prioritise bespoke production: Order furniture that is manufactured as needed, instead of buying from stock. This reduces waste and unnecessary resource use.

Consider transportation: Choose a partner that uses sustainable shipping methods, such as boat transportation, to minimize carbon emissions.

Take your social responsibility

Finally, sustainability is also about benefiting the surrounding community. Responsible companies operate with the correct rules of the game for employees and suppliers.

“We buy over 70 percent of our underlying production in Europe. It gives us control over the conditions for the people in the production and we can guarantee a fair product to our customers,” says Floris.

Waste from fabrics is recovered and used to sew bags.
